1 in 5 individuals have a disability in the UK, so understanding and being able to identify a potential barrier to watersports is crucial.  This one-day RYA Disability Awareness Course run here at All-Aboard is recognised throughout the UK as giving a valuable introduction to disability awareness. The course follows the RYA syllabus but additionally gives practical knowledge and skills that can be used at our centre and elsewhere.

The course addresses disability from the viewpoint of the social model of disability to help identify possible barriers and how they can be overcome.  The course uses scenarios to understand the needs and appropriate strategies on how to work with individuals with physical disabilities, visual impairment, hearing loss, learning disabilities and mental health. You will learn how to improve communication skills and an overview of the Equality act and its implications for sport.

The course will teach you to be aware and able to demonstrate knowledge of the following;

  • The needs of disabled children and adults
  • Improve essential communication skills
  • The use of current terminology used to explain disability
